Perceived Stress Scale Results

As a tool to measure stress levels, coping skills, and the impact of stress on an individual’s daily experience and quality of life, YMTP² administered the Perceived Stress Scale, a widely used psychological instrument for measuring the perception of stress. Participants of each cohort were given this inventory as a baseline assessment upon the cohort’s beginning as well as upon completion of our 95-hour training together. The results are outlined below.

Key Findings:

  • Overall perceived stress decreased across all cohorts, with consistent reductions from baseline to final assessment.

  • Core stress indicators improved, including feeling nervous or stressed, overwhelmed by demands, and lacking control over important life events.

  • Emotional regulation strengthened, shown by decreases in anger, irritation, and stress related to factors outside one’s control.

  • Coping confidence increased across cohorts, including greater confidence in handling personal problems and feeling more “on top of things.”

  • Improvements were consistent across multiple PSS items and cohorts, suggesting broad, reliable gains in stress management rather than isolated changes.

Across three cohorts, participants demonstrated consistent, measurable improvements aligned with CASEL SEL competencies. Self-awareness and emotional regulation strengthened, with reductions in key stress indicators ranging from 12% to over 50%. Self-management improved through increased ability to regulate irritations and decreased feelings of overwhelm. Coping confidence and sense of agency increased by approximately 12–23% across cohorts, alongside greater optimism and perceived control. Collectively, these findings suggest broad, reliable gains in stress management and social-emotional functioning rather than isolated changes.
